Vice President Kamala Harris may be the Democratic nominee for president, but her step kids, Cole and Ella Emhoff, know her best as "Mamala." According to her husband Doug Emhoff, it didn't take long for his kids to give her the nickname. In Harris's cover story for Vogue, the second gentleman recalled the first time his wife met his kids, whom he shares with ex-wife Kerstin Emhoff.
“Kamala was very mindful of not meeting the kids until she and I were established as a couple, and it looked like it was going to really go the distance, as she herself was a child of divorce," he explained. When Harris and Emhoff felt like the time was right, the four of them went for a seafood dinner in Malibu. Harris, of course, arrived with cookies in hand, and Doug excused himself from the table to allow them time to get to know one another. “I went to the bathroom and then, you know, kind of waited an extra five or seven minutes under the guise of having a ‘business call,’ so I could let them spend some time together,” he said. “By the time I got back, they were laughing.”

The kids also took Harris to an art night at their school, where they introduced her to their friends. Emhoff said it wasn't long before the four of them were a close-knit bunch: “Pretty soon after that Kamala became Mamala.”
Now the family has the sweetest, and most relatable, weekly tradition: Sunday family dinner. Even in the midst of the madness of the 2024 election campaign, the family makes sure to prioritize their time together. The nights involve Doug watching football and Harris playing music (Beyoncé and Bob Marley) while cooking her “world-famous roast chicken" or "world-famous Bolognese.”

“It’s just the family there,” she said. “That’s my very happy place.”
